I make stone sculptures, mainly in various limestones and in a variety of styles, including representational pieces on natural themes, relief carving and incorporating lettering into sculptures.
I particularly enjoy making abstracts. Evolving the design as I work, I like the way it combines artistic inspiration, a bity of geology, and the age-old hard work of cutting and smoothing the stone. I’m particularly interested in the interplay of curves, shadow lines and texture, and sometimes combine more than one type of stone or include other materials such as glass or, recently, metal leaf.
Most of my pieces are small enough to be carried, though I have done several larger commissions, and they are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Most of my sculptures are done for their own sake, and if other people like them too then it’s pleasing. I am also happy to take on commissions, working out together how a client’s wishes and my own design thoughts can be combined.
