Diana Roles

I am an independent artist and my studio is situated on the Berkshire/Surrey border.

I studied 3D design specialising in ceramics at Middlesex University followed by a teaching career in Further Education. Alongside my lecturing I have always continued to design, produce and develop my ceramic pieces exhibiting my work in various galleries throughout the country both inside and in the outside environment.

My work has always been based on the close observation of the constant changes taking place in my garden and surrounding countryside. I record all the seasons from the warmth and movement of early spring through to the dying withered forms of winter. All the rhythmic patterns of plants.

Initially my pieces were quite formal and structured then developed into a more fluid response. Recently I have been experimenting with the inter-relationships between a collection of pieces weighing up the dynamics they create. This development seems to have resulted in more delicate forms that I hand build and then pierce so light can filter through the forms and create their own patterns. My intention has always been to ensure my pieces enrich their surroundings with elegance and interest and not dominate.
