Sharon Rich

Sharon was raised in Cornwall on the edge of Bodmin  Moor and has enjoyed art and creativity since as far back as she can remember.  It wasn’t until her children were older that she was able to pursue her dream of being an artist. In 2007, she started stone carving under the tuition of sculptor Pat Elmore, and has been hooked ever since.

Working mainly in limestone and various soapstones, she hand-carves each piece using a mallet and chisels. The sculpture is finally sanded and polished. Each sculpture is unique and can take several weeks, even months, to complete.

Sharon enjoys the challenge of stone carving as well as the absorbing, therapeutic effect it has on the mind. Creating a stone sculpture is physically demanding with plenty of elbow grease involved! Stone work also requires much patience, hopefully injecting some soul into the piece.

Her work is diverse, reflecting her love of animals, nature and the countryside along with a pinch of myth and magic too. The essence of Celtic Cornwall often creeps into her work. She loves the way the shadows cast by light on the sculpture create the illusion of constant change.

Sharon has taken part in Oxfordshire Artweeks since 2009, and works mainly from her home near Fernham. Other exhibitions include Showborough House Affordable Art Exhibition, Gloucestershire, and more locally, Swindon Open Studios, Carterton Open Art Exhibition and Faringdon Art Society Annual Exhibition, where she won the prize for best 3D artist in November 2012.

Commisions are welcome.
