Lorraine Benton
Lorraine studied sculpture part-time for several years before undertaking a Fine Art degree at Hertfordshire University. She has since received commissions from an Arts Trust for a London park and also by a major land developer for a new housing site. Lorraine has exhibited in group shows in the UK, including Woburn Abbey Gardens, the Affordable Art Fair, and Beaulieu, as well as in Europe.
Her original works focused on life studies, ratio and learning how to describe form, not only by what was present, but also by the spaces within and around the subject matter. She developed an interest for ‘Trompe l’Oeil’, and for abstracted form which is now the focus of her current work. These fluid, organic forms often reference themes from our natural environment, and are influenced by her interest in science, music and mathematical sequences and rhythms.
Limestone is her medium of choice for smaller works, and prefers to work with polystyrene for large scale carvings, as gestural strokes and movement can be captured. These pieces can then be cast in the medium of choice, such as bronze.
Lorraine has been an active member of the Hertfordshire Visual Arts Forum for over 15 years, and recently joined the Oxford Sculptor Group and Surrey Sculpture Society. She has recently been appointed as an Associate of the Royal British society of Sculptors (ARBS).
