Donald Foxley
I first took up sculpture at evening classes and fell in love with it, so in 1994 I took early retirement from my career in civil aviation engineering and embarked on several courses and workshops, principally the Open College of the Arts sculpture course.
I learnt from several good tutors, particularly the late George Muller. I became a Friend of the RBS and learnt a lot from John Brown, Charlotte Meyer and others. I took a teaching course, and thoroughly enjoy teaching sculpture to adults, and giving talks and demonstrations.
I have exhibited at many locations, mainly in the South East – I remain an active member of Surrey Sculptors as well as the Oxford Sculptors Group – and in Cumbria where I now live. I was a founder member of Cumbria Sculptors.
My work is mainly abstract, usually inspired by the shapes of mundane objects I see around me. I work in a range of sizes and materials. I use clay or stone for small to medium-sized pieces, and glass-fibre resin for larger ones. My speciality is large abstract garden pieces, usually in resin, which can be finished in a variety of ways, usually simulating bronze or stone. They are usually unique, but I also do some limited editions, and have some professionally cast in bronze or resin bronze.
I can work to commission, and have pieces in America and Germany, as well as Britain.
