Deborah Harrison
Deborah is a contemporary sculptor who specialises in stone. Her attraction for stone comes from its ancient permanence and inner beauty. She began carving late in life with the Open College Network, then went onto study Fine Art and a diploma in Stone Masonry. She turned professional in 2015. Using a technique called 'Direct Carving' she respects the form, colour and grain of the stone. This method was employed by carvers such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore who are also from the rugged county of West Yorkshire.
No sculpture is ever the same, as no stone is ever the same.
Each stone has an individual story of creation and extraction.
Intuitively finding the trapped image then reaching a skin, the stone takes on a life of its own.
Each sculpture is an original; a result of a symbiotic encounter between the carver and the signals of the stone.
Deborah has exhibited in Pall Mall, St Stephens Walbrook and All Hallows by the Tower of London and in Norwich, Coventry and Gloucester Cathedrals. She welcomes visitors to her workhop at Gloucester City Works and leads 3D stone carving courses for all levels of experience and ability. She takes commissions for indoor and outdoor sculptures for public and private clients.
