Alastair Hunter
Alastair Hunter looked around at sundials and felt inspired to try his own imagination on these familiar garden ornaments. Within a short period he started to recognise possibilities for sculpture, and a mathematical need for precision, in this his new experience of creative work.
His first work 'Solar Time', completed in 2009 proved to be an award winning sundial design, which was soon followed by 'Orbit', that gives the impression of planets in motion around the solar system. 'Noondial' refers back to older ways of keeping time, while his latest piece 'Hourdial', appearing in 2012 is evocative of time's endless sweep and space's deep mysteries.
Alastair draws on engineering experience in energy, aerospace and agriculture, and he tries to sculpt the special intricacies of sundial alignments into forms that help us see and understand more of the world around us. He mainly works in brass and stainless steel, and looks for pleasing ways of matching sundial and pedestal in ceramic, stainless steel, and stone.
