Melissa Cole

Working directly with metal, Melissa creates sculptures that utilize the traditional blacksmithing techniques of her craft while developing her own sculptural language.

Older work forged from re-claimed wrought iron resonates with its origins in functional objects, re-forged in simple and pure sculptural forms; physical gestures and reflections of intimacy captured between the lines.

By working directly in metal, the mark-making and lines formed off the hammer are an intrinsic element of each piece created.

Later work explores physical journeys, paths and mapping, Melissa has been working with concepts of imagined and real path-ways, flight-paths and marks made by the passage of man and animal kind across the local landscape surrounding her forge. Three dimensional landscape works resulting from her own journeys are a main focus for her sculpture at this time.

Melissa endeavours to take the freedom and scope of her sculptural ideas and link them to the constraints and problem solving of the commissioned work she undertakes.

Recent public commissions include:
‘River Route’ wall installation at Chapel Street, Oxford
Neuron brain panels at Cherwell College, Osney Lane, Oxford
