Lendon Scantlebury
IT IS WITH DEEP SADNESS THAT OXFORD SCULPTORS GROUP REPORT THAT LENDON SCANTLEBURY PASSED AWAY ON THE 11TH JANUARY 2017. THIS PAGE ON THIS WEBSITE WILL REMAIN, AS A MEMORIAL.
Born in Barbados, Lendon was a dynamic and colourful character with a deep enthusiasm for his artwork. An early life in Barbados left a colourful imprint, on which he drew memories of his childhood. Sights, sounds and smells recalled deep meanings for him.
When asked to list words which described the way he worked, Lendon began with selfish, private, intense, methodical and passionate. All these are qualities which combine to release and realise the artist within. He continued with form and movement, especially dance, his sense of 3d form was apparent, images were born from his passionate response to the world around him.
"My sculptures are mainly contemporary, looking at the human psychological and spiritual journey in life, using materials such as wood, leather and cloth to eventually be made into bronze. My sculptural forms are intended to give a representation of the subject rather than detail. Sculpture to me means shape form and simplicity."
Lendon had over 30 years in the bronze foundry and sculpture casting business, having owned and run his own Art foundry for some years. This gave him the knowledge and understanding of working in bronze as well as the wide range of patinas.
He was a passionate professional artist who sold, and worked to commission, exhibiting widely in the UK. He also did restoration work for all types of sculptures in all mediums. He loved this work as he felt that he was bringing a neglected or broken sculpture back to life....
